Saturday 14th April the gruelling Gold Coast Cup OC Change Over Race was held with our Open Women’s Crew coming in first to take the Gold Medal - awesome job girls!!!
It was a long hard 40km race starting at Greenmount finishing at the Spit (Southport), with confusion at the start line, wind, big waves, rain and finally sunshine. Oh and I forgot the changes on the way.
Congratulations to the team, Sandy, Vanessa, Rowie, Cath, Carrie, Brenda, Nicole, Spilly, Vee and Kylie.
What a way to spend 3hrs 27mins and 38secs just paddling with the girls!!!
BRD also had a second Open Womens crew racing, some paddlers competing in their first Changeover Race. While we didn't take line honours, this was a great experience, hard at times but we survived!!
While we paddled in the same conditions, add in sea sickness, our steerer who did the whole race - we had it all!! Well done to my fellow crew members Di, Ren, Carol, Ang, Tracy P, Tracy E, Janine, Cindy (NZ) and massive thanks to Suzy from our sister club Caloundra for steering us all the way home.
Heaps of positives, we all got in the canoe (somehow), we didn't flip at all and we weren't the last canoe to finish the race.
Like Spilly says just a 4hr 8min 30sec paddle with the girls.
And of course we had an Open Men’s crew competing as well. I hear they ran a couple of Huli drills along the way! Great job boys to still be up there with the gun crews from Outrigger and Mooloolaba. Recorded time 3hrs 23mins 45secs. Congrats to Adam, Mithra, Steve, Rod, Mark, Bryon, Kira, Jason and Wazza.
For all crews to compete in this race there is a lot to be done, canoes to race start and rigged, plus all the bits, 3 support boats with drivers and managers, changeover charts, transport.
Big thanks to Bryon, Norbert, Steve and boys for getting canoes to race start and rigged Friday morning. Norbert and Steve for towing and organizing the boats. Thanks Uncle Blair for your boat and looking after the second girls crew, Aidan and Gerri for being Managers. Thanks to the coaches Sandy and Bryon for pulling it together with the Change charts.
Great team effort everyone, fantastic support and co-operation what a great team spirit. We all definitely deserved and enjoyed those Coronas afterwards.
Thanks to all and apologies if I've left out anyone.
See you all on the water soon.
