Dragons Abreast Brisbane (DAB) is the Brisbane branch of the national organisation Dragons Abreast Australia (DAA), known colloquially across Australia as “pink ladies” because of the hot pink rashies they wear.
Team Missabittatitti (MBT) is made up of breast cancer survivors who, along with the whole Dragons Abreast movement, demonstrate that people can live full, active and satisfying lives after a diagnosis of breast cancer. While not competitive in the strict sense of the word, these ladies exhibit a determination to live life to the full, enjoying not only their sport, but all other aspects of their lives – they know how to party!
To help them on their quest for life is another group within DAB – their supporters. Known now as Pink Connections, this group is made up of husbands, friends and people who for various reasons want to support the survivors. While some paddle regularly with the team, others may never pick up a paddle but provide support in other ways – cooking barbecues, providing transport, taking photographs (with 20 cameras at once) or looking after team bags and equipment at regattas.
There are now Dragons Abreast groups in all Australian States and Territories. Some are stand alone clubs while others, like DAB, are teams within a parent club. Many people who start paddling as part of a Dragons Abreast team go on to compete with sporting clubs at State, National and International levels in their sport.
