How are the training sessions allocated?
Session times will be arranged with your nominated team captain. They will negotiate a suitable time that is best for all paddlers involved.
- Sessions are scheduled for weekends. (Afternoon or evening sessions can be organised if requested.)
- Three sessions are required for each crew.
- All sessions will take place from early December through until late January. Check with your team captain.
- Please remember that all people who will be paddling at the regatta
must attend these training sessions.
What will be involved with the training sessions?
All of the training instructions will be given to your crew via an experienced Brisbane River Dragons club member. To get you on the right track, here are some quick tips.
- The first two paddlers (or strokes) are the focus of the boat. Everyone else must be in time with them.
- The drummer drums off their lead and that is where you get your major timing and speed.
- The noise gets the team motivated and the audience excited about the race.
- The start of the race can make or break the race. The idea is to get your boat up and out of the water and moving across the top as efficiently as possible. You should have enough energy to do a short sprint to the finish line!
- Practice your timing! This is where you get the advantage. It's done by keeping in sync with the lead paddlers and counting with them.
Remember the real goal is having fun through paddling together and raising money for charity at the same time!
What should I bring?
- Water. This is essential while out on the river. Bring a bottle.
- A hat and sunglasses are recommended and of course plenty of sun
cream.
- Be prepared to get a little wet, a pair of board shorts and a t-shirt or
rashie is standard attire.
- Shoes are optional, joggers and reef thongs can be worn for extra grip
in the boat.
Where does the training take place?
Training sessions will take place at the home of the Brisbane River Dragons at the Colmslie Recreation Reserve located at:
400-420 Lytton Road, Colmslie
(behind the State Hockey Centre on Col Gardiner Drive.)
